It’s a privilege for us as the only Norwegian organiser to host legendary American band Yellowjackets this autumn, together with Brazilian vocalist Luciana Souza. Since the 80s, Yellowjackets have accrued an enviable discography. Often placed in the jazz-fusion bracket, they command great respect from a sizeable and loyal following, as well as other musicians. Not surprising then, that they have performed with “one and all” in jazz circles over the years. Their early period was characterised by a synth soundscape, eventually moving over into a more acoustic realm, yet one where bass and synth are still an important part of the contemporary constellation.

One of the band’s hallmarks is the solid compositions where the melody is at the forefront, accompanied by a creative rhythm section. That they are inspired by the American jazz tradition is without doubt, with elements from Coltrane to legendary 70s fusion bands all recognisable. Despite changes to the line-up over the years, many will maintain they have left their own musical footprint.

Today’s band comprises founder Russ Ferrante, longstanding saxophonist Bob Mintzer and drummer Will Kennedy. A fresher face is bassist, Australian Dane Alderson.

They are joined by exciting guest artist, Brazilian vocalist Luciana Souza. New to Stavanger, but by no means new internationally, she has several critically acclaimed recordings to her name, along with many guest vocalist accolades, such as on Herbie Hancock’s «The Joni Letters» album.

Line up:

Russell Ferrante – keyboards

Bob Mintzer – sax

Dane Alderson – bass

William Kennedy – drums

Luciana Souza – vocals
