We can safely use the term super-guitarist to describe Mike Stern. He gained notoriety when he began performing with Blood, Sweat & Tears, Billy Cobham and not least Miles Davis during the 80s. Stern tours globally with his own bands comprising Dave Weckl, Richard Bona and Randy Brecker, among others, and has a foot in both the rock and jazz camps with idols such as Jimi Hendrix and Wes Montgomery – influences that he has distilled into his own highly distinctive sound and style.
One collaboration Stern has really valued is with the award-winning pianist and composer Jan Gunnar Hoff from Bodø, which began in 2006 with Hoff’s commissioned work MAGMA for the Nordland county music festival. Stern played a central role here. They toured nationally and globally with the project in 2006 and 2007 with great success, including a performance for 3000 concert-goers in Kiev.
Hoff put together a new quartet with Stern in 2016 with highly competent drummer Audun Kleive and bassist Per Mathisen. The music to be presented as part of their March 2018 tour is brand new and we’re delighted to have the band perform at Spor 5
