It’s soon three years since Jan Granlie marvelled over whether Significant Time had played Maijazz’s best concert back in 2015. Since then, the band have released a debut album, written a commissioned work for Vossajazz, represented Norway at the 12 Points festival and toured and played festival gigs far and wide. Finally, they’re back at Spor 5.
Last summer music journalist Henning Bolte told All About Jazz magazine that Significant Time were a good example of what’s happening with today’s generation of jazz musicians, referring to the band’s ability to sew together contrasts, layer upon layer, constantly metamorphosing into the unexpected. They’ve become adept at this, something they demonstrate through their robust and unconventional compositions where complexity is, surprisingly, made accessible thanks to their fresh and authentic tonal language. Not forgetting large doses of improvisation and excellent interplay, naturally. The band are otherwise recognised for being especially good live performers. As Vossajazz reported, “One of the most exciting young bands currently on the Norwegian jazz scene. Pure and simple.”
The quartet are of course joined by eminent guests André Roligheten and Hayden Powell, who otherwise can be heard with accomplished jazz orchestras such as Albatrosh, Team Hegdal and Trondheim Jazz Orchestra.
